"Be watchful, sober, and vigilant"
A tabulation of the diseases which Christ Jesus healed during the three years of his ministry, as recorded in the New Testament, shows them to have been as follows: palsy, paralysis, leprosy, deformity, blindness, fever, dropsy, hemorrhage, violent insanity, epilepsy. These are but the more notable and special instances, and we read that when the people brought to him those who were sick with "divers diseases," or "all manner of sickness," "he healed them all." It is worth noting, too, that some of these diseases are even to this day considered incurable by medical practise.
The recorded cases of healing by the immediate followers of our Master are summarized as follows: a man lame from birth, paralysis, lameness, fever, hemorrhage, insanity, the sting of a poisonous serpent; while the book of Acts records that "by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought." It is also well known that for the first three centuries Christian healing was as much a part of Christianity as was the preaching of the gospel. After these early centuries, however, Christians lapsed into the common belief that some form of medical treatment was necessary in order to heal the sick, and this belief continued, with rare exceptions, until Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
In the years since this discovery was first promulgated to the world through the publication of Science and Health, the Christian Science text–book, in 1875, hundreds of thousands of cases of healing without medicine or surgery have been reported, and over ten thousand of these have been published over the names of the persons healed. These cases include not only so–called incurable diseases, but also supposedly curable diseases which had advanced to the hopeless stage where certain death was predicted. Not only is there this volume of printed testimony, but every Wednesday evening, in The Mother Church and its more than fourteen hundred branch churches and societies, all over the civilized world, testimony is borne to the healing of all manner of physical discord. This even at a low average would mean that between four and five thousand spoken testimonies to the efficacy of Christian Science, either through treatment or the reading of the text–book, are offered to the public every week.
