The Democrat
If those who indulge in public comment on the subject of Christian Science would only take the trouble to inform themselves as to its teachings and practise, there would be no occasion for complaint, because men have an undoubted right to express their honest opinions concerning differences of belief. Almost invariably, however, that which is offered as an unfriendly criticism, is in fact a criticism of something that is not Christian Science at all. A case in point is the summary of remarks on the subject as printed in a recent issue.
Christian Science does not teach that matter is unreal or non-existent to the human sense of things, or that human beings are immune from sin, sickness, and death. Quite the contrary, it teaches that matter and its discords are inevitable conditions of belief in what is called material life; but it emphasizes the fact that these are no part of the true life, which is essentially spiritual. The point is clearly illustrated by the simple statement that man, made in the image and likeness of God, is not, could not be, material; because God is Spirit, and His image and likeness must be spiritual.
The student of Christian Science begins to get acquainted with his real self, and he finds this knowledge helps him in many ways. His ability to think rightly about himself is made increasingly manifest in better health and morals. Quarreling with the language of its text-book is not the way to stop the progress of Christian Science. So long as it continues to make good its promise to heal the sick and reform the sinner, it will maintain its marvelous growth throughout the world. Those who accept prejudiced or ignorant misstatements concerning it, instead of testing it for themselves, are merely postponing the day of their own inestimable betterment.
