"NO ROYAL ROAD"

Mrs. Eddy's admonition to students of Christian Science on page 495 of Science and Health, to "study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit" of this Science, must be accepted by these students as the only road leading to the correct and demonstrable knowledge of God which heals the sick. This admonition is also in line with her statement on page 350: "To understand all our Master's sayings as recorded in the New Testament, sayings infinitely important, his followers must grow into that stature of manhood in Christ Jesus which enables them to interpret his spiritual meaning. Then they know how Truth casts out error and heals the sick. His words were the offspring of his deeds, both of which must be understood. Unless the works are comprehended which his words explained, the words are blind."

Mrs. Eddy knew of "no royal road to learning" by which she herself or her students could obtain without labor and study that full and complete knowledge of infinite Mind which ushers in the kingdom of heaven and gives humanity the power to interpret the Scriptures and heal the sick. On page 109 of Science and Health she tells of the years of earnest study which preceded her practise of the great truth which had come to her through revelation, and as she walked the straight and narrow way, so it must be with all her followers.

Christian Science is not a subject to be lightly skimmed over or casually looked into. It is the most serious and most far-reaching and comprehensive subject with which mankind has to deal, for it embraces the knowledge of God which Christ Jesus possessed and said was life eternal. Because of this great importance it must be studied prayerfully, earnestly, and continuously in order that it may be demonstrated, and the knowledge thus gained must be demonstrated in order to be sure that it has in fact been gained. This is the line of action which Mrs. Eddy followed, and the same order must be followed by all who call themselves Christian Scientists if they are to obtain the full benefit of her teachings. If Christian Science is the truth, then it must be a rule of conduct applicable not only to some human experiences but to all human experiences, and too much time and attention cannot be given to its study nor to its demonstration. Human experience is but a series of problems to which there are right answers. To obtain these answers by the demonstration of Christian Science is to grow in grace, and ultimately to reach that exaltation which merits the "Well done" of Spirit.
