I first became interested in Christian Science when, on...

I first became interested in Christian Science when, on going home for a visit, I found my father reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." He eventually became a member of the Christian Science church. As he had always been a good man, and had held nearly every office in the church to which he belonged, I therefore felt sure there must be something in Christian Science to lead him to take such a step. I started to read the text-book, and was much impressed by it. At the time I was a member of a church, but I often felt that one's spiritual life was much neglected and I was very dissatisfied. The love expressed in the Christian Science church appealed to me very much, but I had scarcely any interest in the physical healing.

In 1908 I had a great mental trouble, and what helped me most then was the advice of a Christian Scientist who told me not to make a reality of the error. In October of that year I was taken very ill with acute lung trouble, and other complications. My parents were wired for, my condition being very critical, and my father immediately began to treat me in Christian Science. This had been going on ten days, and I was delirious most of the time. It never occurred to me to ask for this help until one night, when I completely regained consciousness, I had a strong desire to see some one to whom I had once spoken for a few minutes at one of the services at Rochdale. When I look back now, I can see God's guiding hand. The obstacles were many, but the absolute assurance of the power of Spirit reflected by this Scientist will ever remain fresh in my consciousness. Error was close on the heel of Truth, for when the lady came I would have given anything had I not sent for her; but before many hours we were all rejoicing, as I seemed to improve suddenly, and asked for food, which I had not had before.

The following morning the doctor came, and he was amazed to see me so well and my high temperature reduced to normal. The practitioner returned home and my father went back to his occupation; then I began to be irritable and so grew worse. A week later the doctor brought a surgeon to perform an operation, and things were found so bad, there being abscesses on the lungs, that he said I would have to be taken to a nursing home as soon as I was able to be moved, and have another operation, and that a part of the rib would have to be removed. For three weeks I was in the nursing home, but got no better. I had such a craving to be brought home that I left, much against the surgeon's wishes. He said that I went entirely on my own responsibility, but I immediately realized that I was under a greater power. After I reached home things went from bad to worse, though everything that love and money could do was done.
