If by any chance there remained with me a single doubt...

If by any chance there remained with me a single doubt as to the truth and availability of that statement found on page 384 of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, ending with these words, "Your Mind-remedy is safe and sure," that doubt was destroyed in an experience I had a few months ago. While on a moving train, performing my usual duties, a heavy box standing on end became dislodged, toppled over, and fell with terrific force to the floor, the upper end striking me with full force on the right ankle just above the joint, fracturing one bone and badly lacerating the flesh. So intense was the pain that the interior of the car for a brief moment became perfectly dark to me; then the above words from Science and Health presented themselves as clearly as if some one had audibly repeated them. I rose up and walked about, at first with difficulty, but denying determinedly the evidence of evil and knowing the allness and the omnipresence of God.

Now that the wound is entirely healed I can look back and truthfully say that after the first two or three minutes not a single sensation of pain was ever afterward experienced. Within an hour I arrived at my destination, where I boarded a street-car and went to my hotel as usual and without difficulty. Upon removing my shoe it was fully apparent how severe the shock had been, and before noon the ankle was swollen to about three times its normal size. By night, however, I was able to wear my shoe, and went to a friend's house for dinner, walking to and from the cars without difficulty and without pain. On returning to my room, I opened the Concordance to Science and Health, and found a veritable flood of references which, when read in the text-book, lifted thought to such harmony and confidence that all fear was at once banished, and I knew from that moment that the healing was complete.

For several days the swelling was very apparent, and the flesh to the knee was discolored, but only for a short time, and throughout the experience I was not for a moment prevented from performing my usual duties. A strange experience seemed to accompany the healing of the cut across the ankle, for the flesh healed over very quickly, except at one end, where it remained open, apparently to allow a discharge from beneath, next to where the bone was injured. The discharge seemed necessary, and was perfectly normal and painless; but in due time this spot also healed over, and that almost within a night.
