Rarely in my life have I given a testimony with more gratitude...

Rarely in my life have I given a testimony with more gratitude and sincere joy than on the present occasion, which calls for the following statement from my pen. The fact is, that my debt of gratitude to God for Christian Science, and my thankfulness to its noble and high-minded herald, Mrs. Eddy, is so great that it seems as if I could not feel at ease until I had relieved my overflowing heart through a public acknowledgment of the benefits received.

Until a few months ago I had no knowledge whatever of Christian Science and was living the life of an embittered atheist. This sad view of things had urged itself upon me through years of observation and experiences of all kinds, particularly through the crying injustice and the cruelties perpetrated on dumb creatures in the name of science, and the indifference of the official church with regard to this evil; but divine Providence and mercy have led me back and made of me a believing and happy man. Christian Science was the means by which this was accomplished, and I thank God daily, from the depths of my heart, for the love which He has bestowed upon me in showing me the way to the church home which I have found with my dear wife in the local Christian Science society.

In the earlier part of last February I was taken with a very severe attack of illness, the lungs and heart being especially affected. Owing to previous strenuous work, and day and night study extending over a considerable period, my condition was such as might have made the trouble terminate fatally. I then gladly followed my wife's advice and secured the services of a Christian Science practitioner who lived not far from us. We were not members of the society at that time, but had read some literature on the subject which had impressed me. We had also made the acquaintance of the aforesaid practitioner some time before, and as we felt entire confidence in her and a sense of perfect trust with regard to Christian Science, we applied to her for help in this serious case, as we had done before in minor instances, carefully avoiding any other means and keeping away from material associations.
