Christian Science does not teach that there "is no sin," in the sense our clerical critic seems to believe, but it does teach us how the Christ overcame, and still overcomes the belief in the reality of sin, sickness, and death. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 460) we read: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being;" and on page 405, "The good man finally can overcome his fear of sin. This is sin's necessity,—to destroy itself. Immortal man demonstrates the government of God, good, in which is no power to sin. ... If sin is not regretted and is not lessening, then it is hastening on to physical and moral doom."

The gentleman says that "the church has not been putting its emphasis upon bodily healing, but upon the saving from sin." Jesus commanded his followers to "preach the gospel," and also to "heal the sick." The Bible says, "Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works;" and Science and Health states, "The best sermon ever preached is Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death" (p. 201).

We agree with the critic when he says, "The church must come back to the whole gospel, the healing of the body as well as the soul." This is just what Christian Science is doing. The world needs a demonstrable religion, and Christian Science is meeting that need by healing the sick, comforting the sorrowful, and destroying sin in the manner taught by Jesus and the apostles. Our friend the minister will find that Christian Scientists are endeavoring to obey all of Jesus' commands.
