It is almost a year since I became acquainted with Christian Science
It is almost a year since I became acquainted with Christian Science. I have every reason to be grateful for this truth, as I owe to it my restoration to health and happiness. For fifteen years I had been suffering with an abdominal complaint, to which new troubles were added every year, such as asthma, a cough, a diseased kidney, rheumatism, swollen feet, and a stomach trouble which caused me the most suffering. Since 1908 I had dreadful cramps in the stomach at intervals of from three to four weeks. Finally they were of daily occurrence, so that it became impossible for me to eat solid food. Several physicians whom I had consulted were unable to help me, and as I was not benefited by the use of drugs, my condition became so wretched that restful sleep at night was gradually denied me. I then consulted a specialist, who told me that I would have to submit to an operation if I wanted to recover my health, for the trouble would eventually affect my mind; but fear kept me from having the operation performed. Another physician, who was also unable to help me, thought that a sea voyage was the only thing he could suggest that might benefit me.
A friend advised me to try Christian Science, and gave me two copies of Der Herold der Christian Science. After I had read them, I thought that if the statements therein partook of the nature of truth, there was a possibility of regaining my health, and after reading these copies several times I knew that the Almighty would restore me. I put my case into the hands of a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly took up treatment and gave me all the explanations desired on the subject. Every free moment was applied to the reading of Christian Science literature and to prayer for right understanding, and all material remedies were discarded at once. When after three weeks I told my practitioner that I would try to work on for myself, she was delighted at the idea. A severe relapse occurred twice, but this was due solely to a sense of fear which had not yet been eliminated. I then called upon the practitioner, and in both instances the trouble was met within two or three days. We must gain an increasing knowledge of God, and the more we read and ponder, the more will our understanding of the truth grow, which makes us free from all fear and evil.
Since then I have been a much happier and more hopeful woman, taking no gloomy view of things as formerly, for I know that God is always with us and does not forsake His children. I thank God daily from the depths of my heart for all these proofs of His love and for the blessings which I am privileged to experience personally and in my home. I am also grateful to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.—Mrs. Mary Waechter, Paterson, N. J.
