Will you kindly permit me to correct some remarks made...
Yorkshire (York, Eng.) Herald
Will you kindly permit me to correct some remarks made by the Rev. C. C. Bell upon the subject of Christian Science in an otherwise excellent sermon, which should do much good? Christian Science is in full accord with all that he has said with regard to the impossibility of the "carnal mind," the human mind he calls it, understanding the things of Christ or Truth. How can that mind understand the things of God when, as Paul declares, it is "enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be"?
Let me, however, respectfully inform this critic that Christian Science is not a "little system which seems to threaten his dominion," nor is it a "rival" in any sense of his own denominational religion or of any other. Christian Scientists accept all that the churches have formulated concerning God, only they insist that these attributes of the creator should not be merely believed in an academic sense, but brought right down into the street and the home. Christian Science acknowledges God to be omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, and it declares that if these attributes mean anything at all, they stand for the fact that God, good, is all the power there is, all the presence and all the science or knowledge there is or can be; therefore Christian Scientists go to God in their sickness and in their sin, and they have "no other gods," whether those gods be called materia medica, drugs, or hypnotism.
Christian Science is bringing a full salvation in the way of Jesus the Christ, a full salvation from sickness as well as sin. Why should the sick man be worse off than the sinner, why should he have to rely upon human aid when the sinner can go to God for purification? Is this rivalry to the Church of England? Nay, it rather is a gift to that great church, something added to that which it already holds; it is the restitution of the healign power of Christ Jesus, who himself said, "Lo, I am with you alway."
