The Discoverer of Christian Science has said, "If pride,...
The Discoverer of Christian Science has said, "If pride, superstition, or any error prevents the honest recognition of benefits received, this will be a hindrance to the recovery of the sick and the success of the student" (Science and Health, p. 372). I had felt for some time that there was something I should do, and one afternoon I took up our text-book with an earnest desire to know what it was. I also took up a copy of the Sentinel, and in a few moments I read the testimony of a friend who was healed about the time that I was. The command then came: "Go, and do thou likewise."
In order to give any correct idea of what Christian Science has done for me, it will be necessary to tell something of my condition at the time it was brought to my notice. Physically I was almost blind with a painful and (according to medical science) incurable disease of the eyes. For years I had been a great sufferer from nervous troubles and many resultant ailments. I was a widow, and had the entire care and support of three children. Although the struggle had been a desperate one, I had succeeded in maintaining my independence, when suddenly, through what seemed to be the selfishness of another (in availing himself of an unfair advantage) my business was broken up. Thus my physical and financial conditions were distressing; but by far the most pitiable feature of the case was my spiritual status.
I had been reared by pious parents, and was taught that although we could not understand why adversities came, they were from God and we must be resigned. Although I was a young woman, I had followed father, mother, two brothers, and four sisters to their graves, and had been resigned. When my only remaining sister, embodying my greatest help and comfort, passed on (after two years of suffering), I rebelled. I did not even ask to be resigned, but went mechanically about my duties, sad of countenance and bitter—oh! so bitter at heart. For three years I carried this weight (until Christian Science set me free), wondering always why God had dealt so harshly with me. Many times I tried to pray, but found no God to hear me. This would seem quite enough, but the bitterest experience of my life cannot be recorded here, nor can I tell what I suffered from being misunderstood by loved ones.
