About five years ago, my mother, who was suffering from a complication of diseases, traveled from hospitals to sanitariums, and tried everything that materia medica offered for her complaints, with no help whatsoever. She had a dear friend who was a Christian Science practitioner, and after failing to receive help through material means she turned to this friend, unbeknown to any of the members of the family. The evening she returned home from a visit to this lady, who had given her a treatment, she seemed so happy and looked so different that the rest of the family remarked about the change. She then told us of her visit with her friend, and stated that she was healed. Inasmuch as there was a great change, and as none of the rest of our family knew anything about Christian Science, we, like a good many others, said everything to discourage her, but, undisturbed by our opposition, she brought forth the literature which this practitioner had given her.
My mother received all her education in Germany, but she speaks the English language very well, only that at times she becomes confused in the pronunciation of words, and when reading in English she occasionally mispronounces a word, and hence receives an incorrect sense of its meaning. After her visit to this practitioner, mother brought home a number of Sentinels and Journals which she was told to read, so she asked me to correct any mispronounced words, while she read aloud. At first I did not want to do so, as I then believed my poor mother was losing her mind, but finally I consented to listen and correct her, and the first thing I knew it sounded good to me. I began to see the light. I became acquainted with the real Father, God who is Love, the ever-present help.
I then presented my mother with a copy of Science and Health. Up to that time, about three months after my mother's healing, I had never attended a Wednesday night meeting or any of the Sunday services, but one Sunday my sister who had attended the services with mother persuaded me to go with her. I did so, and I am grateful to God for having been brought into an understanding of Christian Science.
