It was through the healing of my mother that Christian Science...
It was through the healing of my mother that Christian Science was brought to my notice. She was healed in ten days of an illness of two years' standing, when the doctor said he could do nothing more and advised change of climate. In my search for truth I had gone from one church to another, hoping I might realize some benefit, and at least feel that I had a sure foundation on which to build my hopes. I prayed God each night to show me the truth, and when I found Christian Science my prayer was answered. Christian Science has given me more than I ever dreamed of getting from any religion. It not only satisfied my longing for truth but has given me a demonstrable understanding of it, that I may put the truth into practice at any time, anywhere; and it does accomplish the thing whereunto it is sent, when earnestly and honestly applied. It is an ever-present help in time of need.
Through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and two treatments from a Christian Science practitioner, I was enabled to make the following demonstration. In September, 1910, we leased a large house for the school term, but before two weeks had elapsed circumstances had changed so we no longer needed it. With the consent of the owner, we tried to sublease the house, and several came to see it, but no one cared to take it. After waiting a month, self-interest suggested that we move out, but I knew this would not be doing unto our neighbor as we would have our neighbor do unto us. My husband offered the owner fifty dollars to release us, but she refused. Then came the temptation to move in case we did not rent the house before the next month's rent was due, but Mrs. Eddy tells us that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494), and I knew Love would meet this need if we would only do right; so I worked along, knowing that man as the idea of Mind must reflect justice. Our text-book also says that "Love is not hasty to deliver us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tried and purified" (p. 22).
The time came for the third month's rent to be paid, and I am grateful that with it came a willingness to pay the rent. I am happy to say that the next day after we paid the rent we had two applications for the house. We were indeed grateful to God, also to Mrs. Eddy for making it possible for us to reflect divine Love to our neighbor. We have peace, the reward of right doing, whereas, if we had listened to the suggestions of error we would not have this harmony.
