[Written for the Sentinel.]

EVER-PRESENCE

Midst the sorrow and the pain,
Midst the murk and midst the rain,
Midst the pleasure and the joy,
Giving peace without alloy—
Thou art with me!

Through the dark and troublous night,
Through the horror and the fright;
Holding, guarding, guiding me,
'Neath Thy shadow hiding me,
Thou art with me!

Be there sorrow, be there pleasure,
Be I poor or have I treasure,
Truth's rod e'er supporting, chiding,
Love divine with me abiding,
Thou art with me!

In Thy presence, now and here,
Is the love that casts out fear,
Love divine my comfort, stay,
Ever near me, now, alway,
Be Thou with me!
