[Written for the Sentinel.]

FREE

Forever free! These are the words I sing
As toward the heights I speed on dauntless wing,
And flash on flash of light illumes the way
To sunlit realms of joyous, perfect day.
The bondage of wrong thoughts, which ever bring
Cloud-shadows dark to which there seems to cling
A motley throng of shapes that ever call,
"No use, no use, there is one fate for all,"—
No longer holds me bound. The day's at hand!
Night only bides where thought cannot expand;
So prisoned close it is by baseless fear
That e'en it shrinks from light and doth appear
To love its narrow, dark, and cheerless cell
Where heavy earth-mists cold forever dwell.
Loose thine own bonds, and let thy thought soar free!
Then shalt thou hear God's word,—then shalt thou see!
