AMONG THE CHURCHES

Newcastle-on-Tyne, England .—Twelve years ago Christian Science was practically unknown in Northumberland, while today there is a flourishing church in Newcastle, a regular meeting in Ashington, and a goodly number of Scientists in outlying parts. In September, 1900, two students of Christian Science commenced work by reading the Lesson-Sermon in a private house. Slowly but surely the numbers increased till, in March, 1903, a small room in the Geographical Institute was rented, and public services were started with an attendance of fourteen, including four children. Much hard and honest work by these pioneers resulted in a reading-room being opened to the public.

Soon more commodious premises became a necessity, and suitable rooms were found in Ridley place. About this time the first lecture on Christian Science was delivered in Newcastle, Judge Hanna lecturing to an appreciative audience. In 1904 the Christian Science Society of Newcastle was formed, and in 1906 suitable service and reading-rooms were taken in Eldon square. In 1909 First Church of Christ, Scientist, Newcastle, was organized, and owing to increasing attendance a further move became necessary. A suite of rooms in the front of the same building, consisting of an audithorium with a seating capacity of one hundred, reading-room, readers' room, and librarian's office, was leased for three years. From that time until the present, interest in the work has steadily increased, and in June of this year services were opened in the Northumberland hall, a spacious concert-room seating three hundred, and new reading-rooms were opened in Northumberland street, the chief shopping thoroughfare of the city. Already results have proved these progressive steps to have been wisely taken.
