Christian Science has nothing whatever to do with the different religions of the Orient, ancient or modern, nor does it in any way contemplate the borrowing of anything from any sect or denomination. It is not a rival to Christianity, for the reason that it is founded absolutely upon the teachings of the one who gave Christianity its name—Christ Jesus. It is the fact, however, that Christian Science differs as widely from "traditional Christianity" as the words and works of Christ Jesus differed from the traditions of the rabbis. Traditional religion now, as then, seems to be intent upon an interpretation of doctrine; whereas Christ Jesus came teaching that the kingdom of God is at hand, and through his knowledge of God and of man's relation to Him, to proved that this knowledge of God set men free from traditional beliefs and practises. The Jewish religion was founded absolutely upon the teachings and demonstrations of Moses. Jesus did not destroy or nullify those teachings. He simply showed men the beauty and simplicity of the Mosaic religion by removing the traditions and ceremonies added to it by the overzealous, and left his hearers with a sense of God's immanence; and through this he proved again that God forgiveth all iniquities and healeth all diseases.

Christian Science is based solely, wholly, and without the least equivocation upon the life, the words and works, of Christ Jesus, and it, too, is removing tradition from Christianity and is again proving by "signs following," namely, the healing of sin, disease, sorrow, and all forms of inharmony, mental, moral, and physical, that it is possible here and now to know God and to be the recipients of His tender mercies and loving-kindness, as in the days of Moses, David, the prophets, and Jesus and his disciples. Did not the great Teacher say: "These signs shall follow them that believe [know God]: they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover"? Christian Scientists therefore say with James, "I will show you my faith by my works," and point to the unnumbered multitude of cases of healing of all manner of disease and sin, as evidence that their religion is the same as that taught and practised by Christ Jesus.
