Not long ago a Jewish rabbi spoke from a Methodist...

Ohio State Journal

Not long ago a Jewish rabbi spoke from a Methodist pulpit in Washington, and recently a Methodist preacher occupied a Unitarian pulpit. That is crossing sectarian lines with a perfect abandon. It ignores the ancient idea that religion is expressed in a creed, and takes Christ's broad view that humanity is the concern of religion and the value of a doctrine is the measure of the good it does to men and women.

We are fast getting away from mere forms and mottoes and putting our convictions into life. The true work of the church today is self-denial, helpfulness, companionship, purity, temperance, sincerity. That is what men subscribe to in uniting with a church. There may be some forms of doctrine, but they are incidental, the main thing being the doing of good, obeying the golden rule, and inspiring men with hope and courage. A church is not built upon an intellectual conviction, but upon faith in God and the final sway of His righteousness. The real orthodox teaching is expressed in the greatest commandments.
