I feel that I must express my gratitude to God for the very many benefits which I have received I began to understand what life really is. It is only through understanding that we are able to reflect Love and demonstrate the fact of Love's ever-presence and power. I have benefited very much both bodily and spiritually, and am now able to realize that "perfect love casteth out fear."

I was spending a day in the country with some friends who had several children staying with them. In the evening we let off a lot of fireworks, and in helping to amuse the children I had my hand severely burned. The pain seemed so great for the first few minutes that I asked another Scientist who was present to help me. I then went on letting the rest of the fireworks off, and no one else knew that anything had happened. When we had finished and I had washed my hand, which was quite black, I found it badly blistered, but as soon as I was able to realize the power of divine Love, I lost all sense of pain from the burns, and after the first ten minutes suffered no more from them.

This is only one instance of benefit received from the understanding of God's law, gained through Mrs. Eddy's discovery and the spiritual meaning of the First Commandment. I also know that the only true way of expressing gratitude is in deeds, not words. With James I say, "I will shew thee my faith by my works."
