It has often struck me that my neglect to acknowledge in print the benefit I have received from the teachings of Mrs. Eddy, is like the conduct of the soldiers of Clearchus, as related by Xenophon, who when danger threatened were only too happy to be under the confident marshaling of a general whom on cessation of hostilities they were inclined to desert for any other leader less firm and rigorous. In order, therefore, to rid myself of the taint of ingratitude, I hasten now to put on record some particulars concerning the influence of Christian Science on me.
I have found Christian Science a grand discipline against delusions. It has taught me that by carrying about with one a corrupt consciousness on any subject, all one's social service and so-called self-denials are but deceivings, having in reality the mad object of earning thereby an easy conscience for one's favorite idolatry. Ill does it behoove those of us who have been dragged out of the pit by Christian Science to forget in self-satisfaction at our new freedom that which should be our first consideration; namely, the pointing out to others still in the pit of the ladder by which we ourselves have been rescued. Morally and mentally, more especially, Christian Science has been my great salvation, and yet the physical realm has at the same time been by no means uninfluenced by "the divine energies of Truth" (Science and Health, p. 186).
At no time of my life have I been more capable of prolonged bodily exertion than I am now. I am able to take bicycle rides of over one hundred miles in a day, and similar hard exercise, without looking forward, as I used to do before I knew Christian Science, to probable suggestions of heart weakness. I have also received splendid help from Christian Science as a cure for headache and toothache, also in relieving subtle and distressing fears to which I had been subject from childhood, and which, owing to the belief of there being a tendency to mental disease in the family, were sometimes very depressing.
