I want to express my gratitude for the help I have received...
I want to express my gratitude for the help I have received through Christian Science. Nearly eight years ago, while I was unable to help myself in any way, after having been under medical treatment for many years, I read some testimonies in The Christian Science Journal. These appealed to me as true, and I thought that if others could be healed by Christian Science, I could also.
At this time the doctor, under whose care I had been for sixteen months, was treating me for kidney trouble and rheumatism; there was also fear of paralysis. I had followed his instructions most carefully, but I had frequent attacks, when I was wholly unable to help myself. My wife and two small children were unable to do the work on the ranch where we lived, and my affairs were in a very serious condition. The doctor had also told me that I would have to drink whisky so long as I lived, and I then began to realize that something must be done, for I knew what effect the whisky would have, as the desire for it had a strong hold on me already.
At last I went to a Christian Science practitioner, and she gave me some Journals to read; but I continued under the doctor's treatment until one day he told me that he could do nothing more for me; that I had followed his instructions most faithfully, but he was then giving me the strongest medicine, and that there was no use of my taking any more. I was glad when he told me this, for there was nothing then left to do but turn to Christian Science. I went to see a practitioner that same day and received treatment. I remember that during the treatment I smiled at the absurdity of the thought that this could heal me, but after making arrangements for further treatment, I went home with more comfort and less pain than I had experienced on the ride in to town, and slept well that night, much to my own surprise, for I had not been sleeping well for many months.
