I have felt for some time that I, as one who had been...
I have felt for some time that I, as one who had been greatly benefited by the knowledge that God has imparted to His children, through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," should testify to the world of the wonderful healing and spiritual unfolding that have come to me through the study of Christian Science, in connection with the Bible, and the services of a Christian Science practitioner.
I had been practically an invalid for twenty years. Despite this, as a lawyer I was forced to forge along the path of pain and distress for those many years, from the fact that my means were limited, and I often went into court when I felt, and my friends told me, that I ought to have been in bed. I had been afflicted for forty years with catarrh; for most of that time I was laid up several times each winter; and five years ago it resulted in an abscess in the ear, from which I was kept in my bed for forty-eight days, with two doctors waiting on me, and when I got up I was a physical wreck. I then traveled for four years, trying to regain my health, after which I came back to what was then Indian Territory, to the Radium wells, which are said to be the greatest health-giving waters in the world. After remaining there for six months, I had the misfortune to be taken with serious eye trouble. The medical treatment seemed to injure my eyes rather than benefit them. My good wife took me to Muskogee in June, 1906, to be treated by as good an oculist as our land afforded; I was led (for I could not see) to his office from one to five times a day for more than ninety days; and tongue fails to tell the misery I underwent in that dark and gloomy time. I was distracted with pain and many times contemplated suicide; indeed, had it not been for my good wife and our little boy, I surely should have done so.
While in this condition one of God's angels (in the shape of an aged Cherokee lady) told me that if I would go to the Christian Science people they could cure me. My answer was, "I could not have the faith." She then informed me that if I would go they would have the faith for me; but I could not see it that way then, and went on with the doctor for almost a year longer. I then made up my mind to see what virtue there was in Christian Science, and on the last day of October, 1907, I consulted a practitioner. From her instructions, I bought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and commenced to study it, also to take treatment for my many ailments. At that time I could not see anything with my right eye, and both eyes hurt me. Besides this, my horse had fallen on the brick pavement and injured my foot, so that I walked with a cane. The day I commenced to take treatment I tried with my glasses to see with my right eye, and could not see one letter, but I thank God that under the treatment of a Christian Scientist and by the study of God's word, in six weeks I was a well man, and had gained greatly in weight. I could see to read with my eye that had been blind, and an obstruction that was caused from an ulcer over the sight of my eye was so thoroughly removed that I could read a whole page. In three days the soreness in my foot was wholly gone, and I have not had any trouble with it since.
