A friend said to me yesterday: "I have read Mr. —'s attack on Christian Science, and I have read about everything else that has been published against the cult. These things do no good. Thousands of people believe in Christian Science. What of it? It brings them comfort. Why should we seek to take it from them? It is none of our concern. Suppose it is an illusion. For aught I know a good illusion is the only reality that we know in this world. Doesn't a man feel kindly disposed toward somebody who has tided him over one of the rough places of life? Don't we stick by the man who was a friend in the years when we needed him? Certainly. We should be ungrateful if we didn't and ingratitude is the worst of crimes. So it seems to me that a man who believes in Christian Science is entitled to his belief and the cheer and peace it gives him. It sometimes seems to me that those who make the most earnest pleas for tolerance are themselves the most intolerant."
