As I have been strengthened and encouraged by reading...
As I have been strengthened and encouraged by reading the testimonies of others, I wish to offer my own. After an earnest and prayerful study of the Bible, with the help of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and other inspired writings by Mrs. Eddy, we as a family (consisting of myself, wife, and daughter) have acquired something of a scientific understanding of God, to know Him as "all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All" (Science and Health, p. 17). With this understanding we see man in the image of ever-present Love, and have been able to make many beautiful demonstrations both in the healing of disease and in overcoming evil in our every-day life.
Christian Science was first brought to our notice in February, 1901. My wife had met with an accident, which resulted in a serious injury to her knee. She was entirely disabled, and after other material means had been tried, without any visible signs for the better, an operation was recommended by a reputable physician, who informed us that she might be a cripple for life. The operation was not performed, however, but after she had been about ten weeks on crutches, without being able to put the injured limb to the floor,—in this hour of trouble, when our only hope had failed, and we were trying to reconcile ourselves to the time-honored belief that it was God's will, a shaft of light from ever-present Love was thrown across our pathway by an angelic messenger, and the darkness and despair began to fade into their native nothingness, thus making room for gladness and sunshine. We were told that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). Material means were at once laid aside, and the demonstration was such that even the most skeptical could not fail to see, although some of our friends would not recognize it as the work of divine Mind. The crutches were not used after the third treatment, and at the end of one week the patient was entirely free to walk any reasonable distance.
Even with this remarkable demonstration, Christian Science was not taken up as a study in our home until two years ago, when through the instrumentality of a very dear friend I was led out of darkness to the light of Truth that makes us free. A very severe case of stomach and bowel difficulty, from which I had suffered intensely, going about my daily avocation in great mental agony, was overcome at once. I was released from bondage, and entered into the greatest sense of liberty that I ever enjoyed. We have had many demonstrations with our limited understanding of this wonderful Science, but the greatest of all is the spiritual uplift, whereby we are enabled to know that divine Mind governs all and that divine Love is sufficient. For these great blessings we are truly thankful to God, divine Principle, to Christ Jesus the Wayshower, and to our Leader, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, which is indeed the Comforter, for this day and age, and which will lead us "into all truth."
