THE LECTURES

Before an attentive and deeply interested audience at the Empire Theater last night [May 26], Frank H. Leonard spoke on "Christian Science: A Demonstrable Religion." He was introduced by E. M. Botsford, who said in part,—

The world has come to know more of Christian Science in the last few years, and to hold its adherents in greater esteem. Honest men, regardless of their belief in this faith, are openly conceding that it has done much good and that Christian Scientists are endeavoring to uplift the race and bring higher happiness to the individual. Christian Science does not come to attack with vituperation and criticism the doctrines of other churches. It does not denounce those who have faith in drugs and medicines as the most efficient means of healing disease. It comes with calm, quiet, Christlike effort to show the reasons for the faith its followers profess. Its basic motto is "Right thinking and right living." It stands firmly on the Bible teachings and promises. It believes that Christ taught the truth; that he did heal all manner of diseases by his spiritual understanding of God, good, as the only power. Christian Science teaches that those who faithfully follow Christ's teachings and come out from the entanglement of materialism, can heal bodily ills as he did. They accept literally the statement of Christ Jesus that all these good works which he did, his faithful followers in this day and generation can do. They believe that sin is unreal because it is evil, and since God made everything and everything that He made must be good, there is no place for sin to those who, by study and devotion and uprightness and love and a pure life, have attained to this spiritual knowledge and understanding of God.—Quincy Herald.
