HOME-MAKERS

Christian Scientists are sometimes asked by those who are becoming interested in Christian Science, as to how certain things should be "demonstrated," as, for instance, a home. This does not always mean that the inquirer wishes to become possessed of a house and lot, but simply what is generally understood by a home. There are, however, very few who stop to consider that a home, in its true sense, is a spiritual idea, and that it can never be truly realized until this is understood and demonstrated. No one would deny that a home means a shelter, a place of refuge, not merely from the wind and rain, but from what some one has called "the world's wild discord;" yet there are probably very few who think of what wonderful opportunities await all of us to be home-makers.

One need not be the head of a house in order to attain this distinction, indeed the head of the house may sometimes think he is too busy to devote much thought to this subject, which is surely an important one; but when the home is seen to be a spiritual idea, it will soon be apparent that the duty of being a home-maker rests equally upon each member of the household, quite irrespective of one's position from a human point of view. Like the state, the home must be governed by law, and it is important to remember here the familiar adage, "Order is heaven's first law."

It is of course true that the mortal concept of order is narrow and limited, but if we lift thought above the material to the universe of God's creating, we shall at least have begun aright, and we may ask ourselves in Paul's words, "Who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth,"—and thus respond to the divine order. Orderliness, both as to time and place, does wonders on the human plane in promoting harmony. A disorderly condition of thought has no place in the true home. It only indicates selfishness and a disregard for the comfort and rights of others, whereas a sense of order and neatness helps to establish and maintain harmony and is one of the foundations of prosperity.
