Montrose (Scot.) Review
The critics of Christian Science have seldom taken the trouble to study it at first hand; most of them are content to take the opinion of others who are frank enough to admit that they do not understand the text-book, and ignorant enough to pronounce judgment on what they do not understand.
Far from being absurd, Christian Science is the only logical presentation of Christianity which has been laid before the world since the apostolic age. Our Lord expressly said that the power to heal the sick by spiritual means was to be the proof of the right understanding of what he taught; and if this proof be not forthcoming, what confidence can we have in the correctness of the teaching which the various Christian sects have to offer us?
If sin and illness are no part of God, they can be no essential part of the man made in His image and likeness. If they were not made by God—the creator of all things—then they are not real, and thus can be got rid of. By maintaining this unflinching attitude toward evil, and by thinking constantly of the omnipotent power of good, of Truth, of Life, of God, the Christian Science student finds that he is able to combat his faults and resist illness more successfully than when he regarded sin and disease as realities. If he can know what is true in his own case, he can know what is true for others also. Thus we can "comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." On all sides we hear the cry that the churches are losing their hold on the people, that the Bible is less read, and faith becoming dimmer than of yore. This is not the experience of the Christian Scientist. He studies the Bible and attends the services of his church with ever-increasing pleasure and interest, because he finds that the more he knows of God, the more he knows of good, of happiness, health, and success. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." He finds this promise daily fulfilled in his life.
