[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE DAWN OF PEACE

Earth called it grief, 'twas but belief
That came to claim an hour;
Truth absolute, heart resolute,
Knows God the only power.

My faith is firm, and hope doth burn
That peace comes with the morrow;
My trust is sure, and thought made pure,
That joy comes after sorrow.

The night is spent, and hope hath lent
Her rays until the dawning;
To conscious thought comes peace, as sought,
And this proclaims Love's morning.
