Three years ago this June I for the first time caught...
Three years ago this June I for the first time caught a glimpse of Christian Science. In the fall and winter of 1906–7 I had been very ill with stomach trouble. After consulting three doctors, one seemed to understand my condition and relieved me somewhat; but after being under his care for four or five months, and finding myself far from well, I consulted him again and was told that he could do no more for me. He said that the passage from the stomach was becoming obstructed, that I must be careful as to diet, etc. His statements caused me to feel that perhaps my days were numbered, and I went to my friends in that state of mind.
My niece then asked if I had ever thought about Christian Science. I replied that I had read some along that line, but to no special purpose, and she proposed that, as the doctor had given me no medicine, I allow a practitioner to see me. I acquiesced, thinking it was the only way out, as the doctor, who was probably the best stomach specialist in the state, had given up my case. After two or three treatments I was able to walk to the practitioner's home, several blocks away, and while there ate an apple, though the doctor had said this fruit was very harmful for me and that I must not indulge in them. I told the practitioner, but she said that it would not hurt me. I enjoyed the apple, and suffered no bad effects. When I left her she told me to go to my friend's home and eat what was on the table, that nothing would harm me; and I did so, much to the alarm of those about me. I took two weeks' treatment, and came back to my home. Everybody here was surprised at my appearance,—I had improved so much.
I did not tell all my friends for many weeks, because I feared that the perfect harmony might be broken by the doubting Thomases; so I kept my own counsel. With further study and instruction I came to understand that "God is All-in-all" and that the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, pp. 113, 468) is true; and that we need nothing but God and His Christ to put our feet upon the rock of ages. I soon became a reader of Mrs. Eddy's "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and found therein bread for my famished sense. The Bible, which before had been to me in many parts unintelligible, became illumined when read in the light of Science, and I have to thank God for His mercies in sending us this great truth.
Last November I allowed error to creep in, and one night I was very sick. I retired about eight o'clock in the evening, but passed a very painful, sleepless night. My husband, solicitous to relieve my suffering, proposed a hot application, which with much reluctance I allowed him to bring me; but after about two hours thus spent with no relief (only what it gave my husband to think he was doing something), I discarded it. Then he insisted that I try brandy, and to please him I took two doses, but neither was retained a moment—matter and Spirit would not mix. Not wishing to disturb any one outside our home, I endured the distress until daybreak, when I called my son from across the street and instructed him to telephone a practitioner forty miles away to come to me on the first train. This was about six o'clock, and as soon as the practitioner received the message she began absent treatment. By the time she arrived, three hours later, I was quite comfortable. She stayed with me until eleven o'clock, and when she left me the pain was all gone, only a sense of weakness remained. In the evening I got up for a little while, then retired and had a good night's rest. I was all right the next day, and at this date I am perfectly well and strong.—Lucy N. Case, Baraboo, Wis.
