The
present writer conceives the first testimonial meetings, held in the early days of Christian Science teaching and experience, to have been the spontaneous gathering of those persons who had "heard" the word and those who wished to hear, for the purpose of testifying to "the healing and regenerating power" of Truth which some of them had actually experienced and others had observed.
The
command of the Master, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature," was intended not alone for the few disciples to whom it was spoken, but applies equally to all, as Christ Jesus is our great Exemplar and the Wayshower for all mankind.
In
the midst of most unfavorable surroundings, in a busy part of a certain city, there stands by itself a beautiful tree, which despite seemingly adverse conditions has not only lived, but thrived,—grown sturdy and useful.
Christian Science healing is not based upon a belief in the influence of the human mind over matter, but upon the spiritual truth that man is the mental manifestation of infinite Mind and that Mind can control its mental creation Man is really mental, although he appears to the senses to be material.
The statement that Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific has been made and corrected so often that it would seem unnecessary to go over the ground again.
Lest we forget that friendship's gentle handHas sealed a tie unbroken through the years,Christ speaks to us, and, lo, we understandThe wings of freedom from a flight of fears.
At
the head of the list of anniversary congratulations to well-known people which Life prints every week, there stands in the issue of July 14, 1910, the following tribute.
Will
our readers kindly bear in mind that the work at headquarters is necessarily divided into departments, also that by referring to the advertising pages of the Journal and Sentinel they will be able to ascertain the person or persons to whom their correspondence should be addressed in order to avoid delay.
I have been helped so much by the testimonies given in the Sentinel and Journal, that I want to tell a little of what Christian Science has done for me.
My attention was first drawn to Christian Science through the healing of my mother, who had a disease which had been pronounced incurable by her physicians.
For eight years I was a more or less constant sufferer from asthma, being so weak during some attacks that I could not stand alone, and lying down was an impossibility.
Words fail me when I attempt to tell of all that Christian Science has done and is doing for me; but with the earnest desire that this testimony may help some one else, I will try to tell in a small way of the power of Truth.
No one can better testify to the verity of our Master's statement, that the knowing of the truth makes us free, than myself, since all that I have to enjoy today I owe to the truth pointed out in this age by our Leader, Mrs.
Mary Madora Harris
with contributions from Granville E. Harris
After many years of sickness and suffering, I was healed through Christian Science, and over eleven years have passed since then with no return of this trouble.
I am very thankful to God that I am living, and more and more thankful for the wonderful unfolding of the truth that we learn through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs.
This is to testify that I was healed of jaundice and dropsy by one treatment in Christian Science, after I had been under the care of a doctor for several months and had received but little benefit.
Grief
came and touched me lightly on the shoulder—With gruesome pressure as the light burned low; With iron bands it bound as night grew bolder,But with the dawn it died: in Love's bright glow.
