Peoria (Ill.) Star

The whole trend of Christian Science teaching is to lift the student above the fear of evil. If certain press reports seem to indicate that Christian Scientists are manifesting fear and superstition, it should be remembered that these conditions of thought obtain in some instances only because of a lack of Christian Science or because of a perverted sense of it. Christian Scientists do not claim to have entirely risen above the miasma of human fear, but as a class they are more free from fear and superstition than they once were, and they have a much greater sense of freedom than they had before they acquired a knowledge of Christian Science.

Christian Scientists have at least begun to understand that fear is never about anything real; that God, who is acknowledged by them as the only creator, never made anything of which they need be afraid. Therefore they are gradually coming to know that in reality there is nothing to fear. They observe that human experience is full of evil conditions which have the appearance of reality, but they do not acknowledge reality or power in these conditions, because they have learned that they are without basis in God, who is omnipotence. Mrs. Eddy says on page 563 of Science and Health: "Human sense may well marvel at discord, while, to a diviner sense, harmony is the real and discord the unreal. We may well be astonished at sin, sickness, and death. We may well be perplexed at human fear; and still more astounded at hatred, which lifts its hydra head, showing its horns in the many inventions of evil." From cover to cover the Christian Science text-book is one mighty protest against the fear of evil.
