I came into Christian Science about two years ago

I came into Christian Science about two years ago. For over twenty years previous to that time I had never known what it was to be free from pain. Operations, sanitarium treatment, osteopathic treatment, electric baths, and change of climate were tried one after another without any benefit. During this time six physicians were consulted, but they gave no encouragement. At the time of my coming into Science I was partially paralyzed, had spinal trouble, and was said to have locomotor ataxia. For a year before my healing I had suffered intensely day and night. I never knew what it was to have restful sleep.

It would be impossible to describe my condition at this time; there was no position in which I could place myself that did not cause intense pain. During the winter of 1908 I grew worse very rapidly, and our family physician, who made a thorough examination and study of the case, said that there was no remedy known to medical science, and that as long as I lived I would be a great sufferer. I had been a devout Christian all my life, but could not believe that God was responsible for my suffering, that He would be less merciful than my earthly father; yet He seemed very far away, and my own prayers and the prayers of a devoted family remained unanswered. For a long time my only prayer had been, "God help me!"

At this time, when on the verge of the grave, a dear friend advised me to try Christian Science. I procured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but for some time even the thought of reading seemed a burden; but one day a great desire came over me to know what it was that brought health and peace to my friends, and with this desire I resolved to give up the medicine I had been taking daily for years and to get all the benefit I could from Science and Health. The desire grew until it absorbed every thought and I felt I could not wait for any one to help me. It seemed as though I had been starving for years and was just within reach of food, and such food! How my heart is filled with praise to God for this heavenly manna. I began to read, and for two weeks I was so absorbed that I was entirely indifferent to my surroundings. When my healing occurred I cannot say, but one day I awoke to the fact that every pain had left me; the burden I had carried so long had dissolved, and I was free.
