Mrs. Eddy's teachings about matter are identically those...

Brantford (Can.) Courier

Mrs. Eddy's teachings about matter are identically those of Jesus, as is shown by the fact that matter and its so-called laws, as manifested in sickness of various forms, are being overthrown through the teachings of Christian Science today in exactly the same way they were in the time of Jesus the Christ. Knowing the truth about these things frees us from the bondage of the material law, but it is evident that in the article under consideration the writer has failed to distinguish between man made in God's image and likeness, and the mortal, material concept of man. Jesus repeatedly proved that the spiritual law is actually supreme, all powerful, and ever present, and Christian Science is likewise proving that this law, when understood, is as effectual today as it was in Jesus' time to destroy sin and sickness. Jesus said: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh [matter] profiteth nothing;" and he also said of those who believed on him, "The works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."

The writer in question refers to the "practitioners of this black art," implying, no doubt, that the healing in Christian Science is accomplished through the agency of the carnal mind. This error has been cleared up times without number, but it becomes necessary to state again that Christian Science distinguishes clearly between the one divine Mind, or God,—the omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient,—which is the only healer, and the carnal or mortal mind, which is never a healer, but is responsible for the myriad ills that afflict humanity today. Christian Scientists believe that this divine Mind is the Mind which is referred to by Paul in the passage, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus;" and they believe that this Mind is as all powerful and ever present to heal and save today as it ever was.

Sneers are very poor arguments, and always indicate a weak case. Moreover, they will carry little weight, I venture to predict, with the large body of your thoughtful readers, who will naturally prefer to estimate Mrs. Eddy and her critics according to the fruits which have been produced by each respectively. If Christian Science has been the means of healing thousands of sufferers of every known ailment, including the worst types of organic disease, after many of them had been given up to die, if it has been the means of reclaiming thousands from lives of sin to lives usefulness,—and these are the works Christian Science has done and is daily doing,—then Mrs. Eddy, as the Discoverer of Christian Science, is entitled to the respect, not the sneers, of every man and woman worth the name; and she will have it.
