In the nine years that I have been reading the Sentinel and Journal...
In the nine years that I have been reading the Sentinel and Journal, I have often thought that we seem to have very little appreciation of what has been done for us in Christian Science. Often in reading our periodicals the help which I would get from perhaps one article was worth more than a year's subscription. Certainly no class of people have so much to be thankful for as have Christian Scientists. They realize, though it may be in a small way, that they are beginning to know something about the only true God, and to understand what the Saviour meant when he said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."
Through the understanding I have gained by reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" in connection with the Bible, I have seen the following cases healed in my own family of three. My husband was healed of a severe case of throat trouble in practically one treatment, with some talk and some reading from Science and Health. He had been subject to this disease for a good many years, but since being healed in Christian Science he has never had even a symptom of it. In a few treatments he was healed of chills and fever, also of nightsweats. In the case of a badly injured thumb, the physician made some rather alarming laws in regard to it; but all was overcome in a short time. For several years my son had worn glasses when at school, but the winter that I began to attend the Christian Science church and to read Science and Health, he only used his glasses part of two or three days, and in the past ten years he has not used or even needed them. In one treatment he was healed of an acute attack of bowel trouble, after suffering all day with it. A good many ailments have yielded with a few treatments, others more slowly. I would also like to tell of one demonstration which we had the first summer after we began to study Christian Science. This son was barefooted, and ran a piece of rusty wire through his heel. It was deeply imbedded in the flesh, and it seemed for a while that it could not be removed without cutting it out; but finally it came out, and in less than half an hour he went back to his play. The wound healed with very little inconvenience, considering the great amount of fear that I had always had about such things.
As for myself, the language at my command is inadequate fully to express what Christian Science has done and is doing for me. In the spring of 1864 I had an illness which seemed to settle in my lungs. My restoration to health was despaired of, but finally my health in a measure returned. The effects of the disease were still manifested, however, in headaches and lung and stomach trouble; and later other diseases developed, until it seemed as if I was sick both in mind and body. For twelve years before I knew anything about Christian Science these ills seemed to be aggravated; I took medicine and gave medicine to my boy until I was heartsick of the whole thing. Often of an evening, when I would look up into the blue sky; it seemed so calm and restful that I would say to myself, "Ah, if I could only go to sleep and never wake, it would be such a blessed relief." For three years, especially, the burden seemed more than I could bear—I do not think I had three good nights' rest in that time. A great deal more could be told, but I have said enough to show that I have much reason to be thankful for Christian Science. After I had read only a few pages in Science and Health, I thought, "Oh, why could I not have had this when I was a child; how much sorrow and suffering I might have been saved from!" When I see children starting on life's journey over the same road that I traveled, I think if their parents could only know that there is a better and safer way, the Christ-way that leads to peace and happiness, and that they could not give their children a better legacy than the practical knowledge of scientific Christianity, as taught and demonstrated by our Saviour, and revealed anew to us in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The understanding of this book certainly does unlock the treasures of the Bible, and so illumes its sacred pages that now we read it with loving interest and benefit.
