COMMUNION

Communion with thy God is not to stand
With eye uplifted and outreaching hand;
Communion with thy God is this—what more?
Never upon His child to close the door,
To feed the hungry and restore the blind;
The lame to strengthen and the lost to find;
To teach the foolish wisdom's word to hear;
To bind the broken, nullify all fear;
To lift the lowly to behold His face,
And cause the proud to seek a lowly place;
To lure the sinner by a loving word,
And banish wrath by hatred's impulse stirred:—

This is communion with all-loving good,
And all may be partakers of this food,—
This "bread of life" that cometh every day
To nourish and sustain us on the way.
