THE LECTURES
Prof. Hermann S. Hering lectured on Christian Science at Greene's Opera House Jan. 24. He was introduced by Don Barnes, who said in part,—
The lessons of the past teach us to keep our minds open and attuned to the reception of new truths. Let us not make the mistakes of the past and rest secure in our old beliefs and in our own ideas, but let us cautiously and candidly investigate the new ideas that are advanced by the best minds of the age. Christian Science has made a quiet yet rapid growth for over thirty years, and its converts and advocates embrace men and women in every walk of life. It adovcates and stands for a higher life, for personal purity and civic righteousness.
Those of us who are not identified with this church, founded in love and builded on faith, must bear witness to its practical results and ethical altitudes. A religion that makes bright the dark places, shelters in adversity, that heals the sick and relieves the suffering, that gives hope in place of despair, happines in place of woe, peace in place of contention, virtue in place of vice, that helps the disheartened to unravel the tangled threads of a dull existence and weave them into the beautiful fabric of better and brighter days, ought to receive a fair hearing and be warmly welcomed by all who believe in the fundamentals of a Christian faith.—Correspondence.
