Two years ago a mule ran over our four-year-old boy, and stepped on his left leg above the knee, injuring it very severely. I carried the child into the house, and began to declare the truth as best I could. He became quiet in about five minutes, and I then straightened the limb and wrapped a towel around it. Then I sent for his father, who was about three miles from home. When he came the child was resting so well that we did not call in a surgeon, and next day we wrote a Christian Science practitioner, asking her to treat him, as we felt that our understanding of Christian Science was limited. She began treatment as soon as she received the letter and the boy continued to improve.

The only time he seemed to suffer was when he was moved. Great fear was expressed by relatives, and many false reports were being circulated. It was told that the child was suffering terribly and that nothing was being done to relieve him. So many similar statements were made that the medical doctors and a number of friends in an adjacent town were so stirred up that they asked a dentist, who is a personal friend of my husband, to call and see the child. He came the fourth night after the accident and remained about three hours. He was in the room where the child was all the time, and on examining him was surprised to find the injured limb just as normal as the other, and to see the child resting so well. He said he could not believe the limb was broken, because it did not seem possible for the child to rest as he did if this were the case. After seeing the child he was perfectly satisfied that the reports were false. He also noticed that there was no discoloration, and we told him there had been none from the time of the occurrence, and he was more surprised than before.

After a few weeks the soreness disappeared, but the boy did not attempt to walk and we noticed that the limb was not straight; that it was turned outward. We became discouraged, and it was decided that I should take him to the practitioner. On arriving there it was discovered that paralysis with complications had set in. She at once treated him, and the child walked next day. He remained with the practitioner three months, when I brought him home. Friends who did not know which limb had been injured would ask when he returned which one it was, and said they could not tell by his walk, for one seemed to be just as free as the other. The leg has never given him any trouble since.
