In the early part of the year 1908, after I had been for many months suffering from acute stomach trouble, from the loss of a dear daughter, from lack of work on the stage, on which I have been for over sixty years, and from worry and trouble of a personal nature, I turned to Christian Science. In the course of a few months I was healed to the extent of being again able to eat anything that pleased me; the worry and personal troubles were straightened out as soon as I put into practice the Christly teaching of "judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment;" the lack of work was disposed of by my having an almost continuous engagement in two successes before the public (except as will be related), and I have learned to know, in respect to the loss of my dear companion, that I have still with me all the good that an idea of God could manifest,—love, tenderness, happiness, which are undying.

Some months after my first healing, which was great enough to give me absolute confidence in God as being "very pitiful, and of tender mercy," while acting in a vaudeville engagement between seasons, I was suddenly taken ill on the stage of one of the New York theaters. I was taken to the hotel that for years has been my New York home, and early next morning sent for the practitioner who had been of assistance to me in helping me out of my former troubles. It was impossible for him to come immediately, but he sent to me a faithful coworker, and between them they never left me night or day until I was out of all danger. It became necessary for the practitioner to close his offices for some five days and remain almost constantly with me, his absences being filled by the other, who acted also in the capacity of a nurse. The newspapers were full of accounts, which were copied in other papers from Maine to California, also in Canadian papers and some abroad, that I was dying under Christian Science treatment, and describing the peril in which I was said to be, etc. The telephone was kept ringing with inquiries from the local reporters, and friends came to the hotel to inquire about me; but to all these things I was quite unmoved, for the simple reason that I was in a state of unconsciousness, or semiunconsciousness, for some three days. It was reported that I was dying from acute lung trouble, but that was utterly without foundation. No one knew what was the physical trouble, but to the ordinary onlooker there lay on a bed a woman of about seventy-four years of age, hopelessly ill.

After constant work in Christian Science I gradually regained consciousness, was able to sit up and take a little nourishment, which I had been unable to do previously. In a couple of weeks I was enabled to go to Atlantic City and have a nice holiday and rest until the time arrived for rehearsals. Since then I have been able to attend to my duties on the stage without missing any performances, to travel with the younger members of the companies on one-night stands and in stormy and cold weather and also in the extreme heat. During these experiences, which are most trying even to the youngest of the people, I have felt no inconvenience other than of being just naturally tired at times. Once or twice or so I have been obliged to ask for Christian Science help, which was always gladly given and to which I quickly responded.
