In June, 1907, I was taken ill with what the doctors pronounced to be Bright's disease with various complications, also appendicitis and peritonitis. They thought it better not to operate, as I probably would not live through the operation. The doctors and a trained nurse did what they could and allayed the severe pain; but they said that if the pain returned the only chance of saving my life was an operation, and they would take that chance. I continued in this condition for six weeks, taking only liquid food. I was a little better one day and not quite so well the next. One Saturday night the terrible pain came back, and when my mother asked what doctor she should send for, I told her I did not wish for any, as a doctor would say that I must have an operation, and this I would not consent to.
My mother had previously been greatly benefited by Christian Science treatment, and in my extremity I decided to try it for myself, although I had formerly been much opposed to it and had said many unkind things about it. A practitioner came, and in half an hour all the pain had left me. I rested all night—such peace I had never had before, and the thought came to me, "This is the 'peace of God, which passeth all understanding.'" The next day I was able to take solid food, and I also had a short ride. I continued to gain in strength and in flesh, and in a very short time I was entirely healed. My mother, wishing to make sure that the healing was complete, had one of the doctors who had treated me make a thorough examination for evidences of the kidney disease, but he found no trace whatever.
Since I was healed my life has been happier than ever before. The spiritual uplift that has come to me through Christian Science seems an even greater blessing than the physical healing, although, in the condition in which I was, I could not have received the latter without the former; indeed, I have learned to know that the healing and the spiritual uplift are parts of the same process. As I look back to three years ago, I feel like asking myself if I am the same person. We have received many other blessings through Christian Science, and I thank God every day for this Science, and for the life of our dear Leader, who has given it to the world.—Clara M. Wood, Fitchburg, Mass.
