I wish to express my gratitude for the benefits which I have received in Christian Science. I was never strong physically, and therefore was unable to attend school. This made me very unhappy, and as time advanced my physical condition grew worse, so that I was forced to give up my studies altogether. From my childhood I had studied the Bible, and in solitude and unhappiness its truths became my constant companions. The New Testament, with its narratives of healing, was very dear to me, and I gradually began to see how inconsistent human life is when viewed in the light of the Master's teachings.
At times I suffered from extreme depression, and would look up helpful passages in the Bible. During the long sleepless nights I would repeat these passages, and would always find relief. Soon a hope that I would be healed began to dawn; my health improved, and I resumed my studies. I had been a member of an orthodox church for a number of years, but now I felt strangely separated from its teachings; and, as no one seemed to understand my new-found joy, I longed for some one who could sympathize with me.
This longing was satisfied when I met a young lady who was a Christian Scientist, and from her I learned that healing was not a lost art as I had supposed, but newly rediscovered by Mrs. Eddy. I purchased a copy of Science and Health, which I read almost night and day, and in a short time felt a sense of freedom such as I had never known before. My joy was unbounded. I never once doubted, but knew that Christian Science was the truth; and I know now that my years of solitude prepared me to accept and understand it. My physical ailments yielded quickly, through the reading of Science and Health, but when I began to break away from the material belief of church and its work, then it was that I needed the help of a practitioner. I shall always be thankful for the sympathy and love bestowed upon me during this time of want and woe, and will mention a few instances when I received almost immediate help.
