"THE PUBLIC IS TIRED"

About every so often some person makes a demand for the moment on the attention of the reading public with a newspaper attack on Christian Science, and tries to bolster up its flimsy tissue with the time-worn and over-worked fabrication that Mrs. Eddy is no longer alive; or, if conceding that she is alive, that she is sick, helpless, or an invalid. While the motive behind these attacks has always become apparent in due time, and there is no reason for believing that such will not be the case so long as they continue to appear, the least that can be said is that this does not mitigate the wrong and wickedness of such an offense.

It is noticeable and significant, however, that the latest of these attacks, which appeared a few days ago, carried with it no conviction of truth either to the public or to the newspapers, and the probable reason for this is explained by the New York American in these few simple words: "The public is tired of the hue and cry against Christian Science, and is not a little sympathetic with the dignified lady who presides over the councils of that church."

The policy of Mrs. Eddy and of her followers, in meeting these attacks, has ever been one of kindness and forbearance, without heat or malice or recrimination. This policy was adopted and has been adhered to because it is right and Christian; that it has been effective is equally true, and for the same reasons. Mrs. Eddy's complete refutation of this latest attempt to discredit her and her teachings is given on this page in her own words, through the signed statement which she issued last Monday.
