Christian Science is not merely a school of physical healing....
Los Angeles (Cal.) Express
Christian Science is not merely a school of physical healing. It is a religion—the religion of Jesus—and has no other authority than the Scriptures. It is primitive Christianity in its fulness. It accepts Jesus' teachings and accepts all of them; it believes that his command to heal the sick is just as imperative as the command to preach the gospel; it believes that the promise of the Master, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," is true, and moreover is proving it to a very large degree.
Christian Science teaches that all the commands of Jesus are to be obeyed by all Christians and in all ages. That these commands were not intended, as some contend, for the disciples only, is clearly shown by their instructions given them by Jesus: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, ... teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." As Christian Science is based upon the teachings of Christ Jesus, it is self-evident that it does not employ any of the agencies of the human mind. It is, therefore, opposed to hypnotism, mesmerism, or suggestion. Christian Science reforms the sinner and heals the sick in the same way that Jesus and his disciples did, and this method always improves the patient spiritually and morally, as well as physically—thus attesting to its divine origin.
It is sometimes said that "the teaching of Christian Science is dangerous, as it claims there is no sin." Such a conclusion could not be reached by any one who had studied the text-book of this Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for this book plainly teaches that sin is the foundation of all mortal discord and that this must be overcome and destroyed by the Mind of Christ before the individual can experience the peace and security that is the reward of him who understands and practises the teachings of Christ Jesus. Christian Science uses the term sin in its broadest sense, and includes in its definition all wrong thinking and acting, whether malicious or ignorant. While this Science teaches the unreality of all sin, it does so in the sense that it is not of God and therefore not permanent or eternal. This recognition of its abnormal and unreal existence enables the Christian to overcome it.
