Christian Science as a distinctive religious denomination...

Creston (Ia.) American

Christian Science as a distinctive religious denomination has been established about forty years. During that time it has had the most remarkable growth of any religious denomination. This growth is based entirely upon the demonstrated results in healing the sick by mental or spiritual means, and upon the fact that it is reformative in its mission, thus fulfilling the complete gospel of Jesus Christ as given to his disciples, when he said: "And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."

The fact that Christian Science has grown in a phenomenal way, and that thousands of people who had failed to find spiritual, mental, and physical healing by any other means have turned to it for such healing, constituted the reason for an effort upon the part of other churches to appropriate some of those things which Christian Science includes. It must, however, be clearly understood that back of all true mental or spiritual healing is a positive Principle, and that without an adequate understanding of this Principle all efforts to heal mentally must end in chaos. Jesus' precepts and example, together with the positive teachings of Scripture, are the only basis upon which successful Christian healing is accomplished. Science and Health, the text-book of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy, explains the scientific Principle which underlies Christian healing, an understanding of which enables one to emulate the works of Jesus and of his disciples, in accordance with his words: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
