[Written for the Sentinel.]

ILLUMINATION

Night covered me. My blinded eyes
Saw not the gracious rays
Of Love's soft light—
Power infinite
To cheer and bless my days.

My dulled ears heard nor sound nor word,
And reason slept, unheeding
The gracious call—
Lo, God is All,
And with thee pleading!

Till, crushed by error, doubt, and fear,
I reached out for Thy hand—
Now Truth is here,
The way is clear—
I see and understand.
