[Written for the Sentinel.]

Hitherto the Lord hath helped us—
Rest, my soul, in that sweet thought:
Every evil that assailed us,
Overcome and brought to naught.

Surely He whose great compassion
Helped us in our darkest hour,
Never will forsake His children
Trusting in His mighty power.

Hitherto the Lord hath helped us—
Fear-destroying, strengthening thought,
Bringing freshly to the memory
All the wonders He hath wrought.

Hour by hour and day by day, then,
Love will be our guide and stay;
We may look to Him in all things,—
God, the Life, the Truth, the Way.
