ONE MASTER

Christian Scientists are asked a great many questions by people who, without knowing it, are trying to reconcile material belief with spiritual reality. They quite overlook the fact that if a single point be conceded to error, one has lost sight of the only possible basis from which to advance in the understanding of Christian Science, viz., the absoluteness of Truth. It should not be forgotten that any admission as to error's reality renders it impossible for one to work out any life-problem correctly. The acceptance of the belief that man is both material and spiritual leads one to doubt whether he is spiritual at all,—since the physical senses furnish no evidence that he is.

Because of a fundamental error in the premises,—namely, the admission that man is material,—human activity seems to run altogether in the wrong direction, almost the entire time being given by mankind to the pursuit of materiality; hence we have error in all the conclusions of mortal man,—sin, disease, discord, death. Then, by way of a remedy, more of the original error is offered,—more materiality,—which shows what results from the attempt to "serve two masters." Either Spirit, God, must be all to us, or matter must be all. Which shall it be?

It should be noted that the mortal or carnal mind never expresses the things of Spirit nor obeys spiritual law. No, Paul was right in saying. "The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Now it is this carnal mind which contends that matter, sin, disease, and death are real, and which also declares that the remedy for suffering must come from matter and from the determinations (and suggestions) of mortal mind itself, or come not at all.
