In the Christian Science Hymnal we read, "Ceasing to give, we cease to have; such is the law of love." I think most of those who have been in Science any length of time realize the truth of these words. I have for a long time felt that I was greatly indebted to others in the Field for the many helpful messages from grateful hearts, and that I also must give from my store. It will soon be ten years since I was led to this truth. I had read a little at various times about this Science, but it always appeared so far away. My attention was directly called to it by a friend who had been healed of chronic catarrhal trouble, an affliction from which he had suffered for thirty-five years. He told me what his personal experience had been, and advised me to try Christian Science for my daughter, who had been afflicted with epileptic trouble for about eight years. Her condition had become very alarming, and medical law had declared that the ultimate would be mindlessness, a condition which had already begun to manifest itself, and looking into the future I could only see years of burden and sorrow.

It was at this juncture that the truth of Christian Science was brought to me in undeniable evidence through the healing of this friend. I saw before me, in my friend, a changed man, and this proof brought me hope. I went that day, Saturday, to see a Christian Science practitioner, and the work began the following Monday evening. The healing was accomplished then and there, though treatment was continued for two weeks; but I slept that night in peace, and have continued to do so. The mental state of my daughter had become such that she could not always go into a designated room or find her place at the table, and she was of course kept out of school. After treatment in Christian Science was taken up her condition very soon became normal; she went on with her school work as if there had not been any interruption, and also manifested perfect health in other ways. There is a detailed account of her healing in The Christian Science Journal of August, 1899. I did not understand at that time that this healing was accomplished practically at the first treatment, but I found out afterwards that such was the case.

In seeking the treatment for my daughter I had no thought of myself, though I was worn out in mind and body, but the truth began its healing work in my own consciousness. The habit of profanity left me inside of twenty-four hours, and severe chronic headache was also overcome for me. I had been subject to attacks of this trouble from my earliest recollection and would often be prostrated by them. From the time I was a young boy I was afflicted with rheumatic trouble. The attacks, though not frequent, were very severe, lasting for weeks, and part of the time I was helpless. I have had two of these attacks since I accepted Christian Science, but on these occasions I suffered very little, and now I know that the dread of them is gone. I am indeed grateful for these physical benefits, but more for the understanding that God's creation is perfect, that only good can obtain at all times. It is not necessary to detail the many unpleasant and evil things that have been overcome and destroyed in myself; they were many, and I am rejoiced to part with them! I do not suppose I am the only one who has found that the hardest battle to fight is with one's self, to overcome self. I feel, however, that this is being accomplished, step by step. I also know that I have a deeper sense of justice and of love for all mankind.
