Christian Science was brought to my notice by a friend...
Christian Science was brought to my notice by a friend who had been greatly helped by simply reading Science and Health. He loaned me his copy, which I read and being convinced of its truthfulness procured one of my own. I then asked a practitioner to treat me, which she did. At this time I was, and had been for five years previous, a broken-down, sickly girl. I had not one, but many ailments, among them being what the doctors pronounced female trouble in its worst form. I had been treated by different doctors and tried many remedies, but all to no avail. I had given up in discouragement, thinking there was nothing before me but sickness.
I had been under Christian Science treatment but a few days when I noticed that a swelling on my hand near the wrist, which had troubled me for more than a year, had entirely disappeared. This demonstration gave me courage, for I knew that if Christian Science could heal my hand it could heal me of all other troubles. I had gained enough understanding of Science by this time to know that nothing is impossible to God, and that one belief of disease is as easily overcome as another when we know the truth. The swelling on my hand seemed to be the least of my troubles at that time, in fact I had not mentioned it to the practitioner, as I felt I could endure this, if only I could be healed of other and worse things. I continued until but one by one the different ailments disappeared, until but one remained,—the most dreaded and disagreeable of all, and I continued treatment for this trouble off and on for more than five years. Last summer I was taken with a severe attack of eruptive fever, which was overcome so beautifully that I asked my practitioner, who lives in Reno, Nevada, to treat me for the chronic trouble also. She did, absently for the most part, and in a number of weeks I was entirely healed, and I am indeed grateful for my freedom.
I would also like to tell of the healing of my nephew, four years old, who was taken with a dreaded fever. At the time treatment in Christian Science by a practitioner in San Francisco, Cal., was telegraphed for, the child was seemingly at the point of death. He had been unable to speak for about three weeks, and had pined away to almost nothing. When Christian Science treatment began, the change was not so noticeable at first, although he rested better, but in a few days there was a marked improvement, and even as one can see the change in a plant, daily expanding in the sunshine, so it was with this child, until he became perfectly well. At one time there was a fear that he had lost his voice, as he had been unable to speak during the latter part of this illness. The practitioner's attention was called to this condition, and she wrote back not to be afraid; that nothing good is ever lost in Truth, and that we should read daily to the child "The Mother's Evening Prayer," and "Shepherd, show me how to go," from "Miscellaneous Writings," p. 389, asking him to repeat the words. This was done, and in less than a week's time he was able to ask for anything he wanted. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 179) that "space is no obstacle to Mind;" and so it has been proven to me, for which I am most grateful.
