My first introduction to Christian Science was in 1900,...
My first introduction to Christian Science was in 1900, when it was presented to me by the one who afterward became my wife. I was then in business in South Haven, Mich. Shortly after hearing about it, my hand was quite badly crushed. My friend learned of my accident, she being in another city at the time, and acting on a previously given permission, treated me. The hand healed so rapidly as to puzzle the surgeon to whom I had taken the case without consulting her. My views of Christian Science were vague at this time, but crystallized greatly during subsequent explanations and reading. My acceptance of the truth was gradual and without notable incident until the birth of our little daughter in 1903. This occurred under Science treatment, and was without ill after-effects, though a physician who was in attendance on one of our household at the time, said voluntarily that he could hardly have hoped it to be so successful. In 1905 I was taken down with what was admitted to be a serious attack of fever, during a local epidemic of this disease. I had become too weak to leave my bed and was somewhat delirious when my wife telegraphed to the practitioner who had attended the birth of our baby. Immediately upon her receipt of the telegram I fell into a sleep, from which I awoke after about six hours, well except for weakness, which left me before the next morning, when I attended to my business as usual.
Besides these seemingly more important manifestations of God's love, we have been blessed by many minor demonstrations, and are learning to apply this great truth to every problem of business or other intercourse as it arises. With each new manifestation of the protecting power of divine Mind, gratitude to the source of all good receives a renewed impulse. I also add my mite to the great stream of thanks flowing ever toward our revered Leader.
