When the term healing is used in Christian Science, it...
Nature Cure
When the term healing is used in Christian Science, it must be remembered that it is applied equally to the destruction of all that is unlike God, whether sickness or disease, pain or emotional ecstasy, sorrow or despair, misery, want, or sin. The medical training of a Christian Scientist consists of only one course, but it is a course which extends, humanly speaking, throughout his life. It consists of the effort to eliminate from his own consciousness the belief in the evidence of material sense; in a word, in anything that is unlike God. Just exactly as he succeeds in doing this he, like Jesus, overcomes the world, and Christ Jesus is the way. A Christian Scientist has consequently only one prescription, but it is the prescription used by Jesus, whose therapeutics were moral and whose physiology was spiritual: "Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Now the Greek word translated repent means, literally, something causing a conviction afterwards, and so a change of mind.
It follows consequently that as a man divorces sensuality from his thought, he touches the hem of the seamless raiment of Christ, and to the extent of the sacrifice he is prepared to make for Truth he is, in the words of Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 55), "endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing." This is about as far from placing the physical welfare of man before the spiritual as anything well could be. It is, on the contrary, accepting fearlessly the words of Jesus, "Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk."
Christian Science, in a word, is Christian because it is the religion Christ Jesus preached, and it is scientific because it is demonstrated by signs following in the way he ordained.
