Like many others, I came to Christian Science for the...
Like many others, I came to Christian Science for the physical healing alone. I had been in poor health for many years, much of that time being under the care of our best physicians. I was operated upon by skilful surgeons, both at our home and at a hospital, but all to no avail. I was a devoted church-member, and loved my religion and my church, but for a long time I had wished for a deeper, more lasting religious experience, and often repeated the beatitude, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled;" and I hoped and prayed this experience might come to me. This was my condition when a friend called and recommended Christian Science to relieve the almost constant pain in which I had been for about eight months. This was in February, and I had returned from the beach the September before in worse condition than ever. We had built a cottage there, thinking the change each year might be of benefit. From my return I had been constantly either under a physician's care or taking massage and electric baths, and at this time I was taking medicine every two hours, and growing worse all the time.
At first I rebelled when Christian Science was mentioned, as in my ignorance I feared it might lead me away from my religion, but when urged both by my husband and mother, I consented, provided my friend would accompany me to the practitioner. I was helped in the first treatment so that I slept that night without the usual pain. My healing was slow, for there was much mental work to be done in rooting up and weeding out wrong beliefs and false concepts. In a short time I discovered that the one who gave me treatment possessed the very experience that I had been striving for, and then I was willing to study our text-book for myself. there were many statements I questioned at first, and many were the battles fought, but I never ceased the warfare until I had proven to my satisfaction every statement. This continued for several months, when I found that I was not only healed physically, but I realized also the ever-present sense of God's love in a way that I knew would never leave me. This was nine years ago, and Christian Science has never failed me, and the path has grown brighter all the way.
It would be strange indeed were I not thankful to Christ Jesus, who first helped mankind into the light, and also to the one whose spirituality brought Christian Science to mankind and thus made my healing possible.
